This gives: 3/8+1/8 = (3+ 1)/8= 4/8. 4/8 can be simplified by dividing the top and the bottom by the factor 4==4/8= 1/2 Therefore, 3/8+ 1/8 = 4/8 = 1/2 Example 2:Subtract the given two fractions: 17/4 5/4. Given expression: 17/4 5/4 Here both 17/4 and 5/4 are fractions and they are being subtracted together. In order to add or subtract two fractions, we have to make sure that the fractions have the same denominator. Both 17/4 and 5/4 have the same denominator 4, hence they can be subtracted directly!
